Frequently Asked Questions

These designate different speeds and form factors:

  • SFP - 1 Gigabit, single-lane
  • SFP+ - 10 Gigabit, single-lane, same form factor as SFP
  • SFP28 - 25 Gigabit, single-lane, same form factor as SFP/SFP+
  • QSFP+ - 40 Gigabit, quad-lane (4×10G), larger form factor
  • QSFP28 - 100 Gigabit, quad-lane (4×25G), same form factor as QSFP+

SFP28 is backwards compatible with SFP+ ports (at 10G). QSFP28 is backwards compatible with QSFP+ ports (at 40G).

Yes! Quality third-party transceivers are programmed with the correct vendor EEPROM coding to be fully recognized and compatible. Our optics are specifically coded for each vendor—when you order a "Cisco-compatible" SFP+, it has the proper Cisco OUI and product codes to work seamlessly without errors or warnings.

We test all our optics for compatibility and back them with our warranty. Many enterprises and service providers use third-party optics to reduce costs while maintaining the same performance.

Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF): Uses a larger core (50μm or 62.5μm) that allows multiple light paths. Lower cost but limited to shorter distances—typically up to 550m for 10G. Uses 850nm wavelength and LED/VCSEL lasers. Identified by orange or aqua cable jacket.

Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Uses a small 9μm core allowing only one light path. More expensive but supports much longer distances—10km to 80km+ depending on the transceiver. Uses 1310nm or 1550nm wavelength with laser transmitters. Identified by yellow cable jacket.

You cannot mix single-mode transceivers with multi-mode fiber or vice versa—they are incompatible.

DAC (Direct Attach Copper) cables are fixed-length cables with transceiver modules pre-attached on both ends. They use copper twinax instead of fiber and are significantly cheaper than using separate transceivers + fiber patch cables.

Use DAC cables for:

  • • Within-rack or between-rack connections up to 5-7m
  • • Top-of-rack switch to server connections
  • • Storage array connections
  • • Any short-distance 10G/25G/40G/100G link

DACs are passive (no electronics) up to certain lengths, then become active. They consume less power and have lower latency than optical connections.

BiDi (Bidirectional) transceivers transmit and receive on a single fiber strand using two different wavelengths—typically 1310nm for TX and 1550nm for RX (or vice versa). This requires using matched pairs: an "A" end and a "B" end.

Benefits of BiDi:

  • • Reduces fiber usage by 50% (1 strand vs 2)
  • • Useful when fiber count is limited
  • • Available in SFP, SFP+, and QSFP variants

Remember: You must pair the correct A and B transceivers. They are not interchangeable.

CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) uses 18 wavelengths spaced 20nm apart (1270-1610nm). It allows multiple channels (up to 18) on a single fiber pair without active amplification. Lower cost but limited to shorter distances (~80km max).

DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) uses 40-96+ channels spaced just 0.8nm or 0.4nm apart. Requires precise temperature control and supports optical amplifiers for long-haul (hundreds of kilometers). More expensive but much higher capacity.

Use CWDM for metro and campus networks where you need more bandwidth over existing fiber. Use DWDM for carrier-grade long-haul and high-capacity requirements.
